A project by Emilio Vavarella
Curated and produced by Ramdom
Presentation of the work of art 1 August at 19:00 at the Hotel Terminal in Leuca
MNEMOSCOPIO is a project by Emilio Vavarella curated and produced by Ramdom with the support of MiBACT and SIAE within the program “Per Chi Crea – Nuove Opere” (2019 – 2020).
MNEMOSCOPIO is a site-specific public art installation. Conceived and developed starting from a geographical-anthropological reflection on the Capo di Leuca area, the work is composed of an experimental viewer for XR (Cross Reality) through which the physical reality of the place where the work is installed overlaps and merges with a 3D memory map. This map was assembled on the basis of interviews, conducted on site, with people who had left the Cape of Leuca but then returned there.
MNEMOSCOPIO adds to a large body of the artist’s work on the theme of the relationship between memory and technology.
Lastation – the operational base of the Ramdom association which is located on the first floor of the Gagliano – Leuca station, was the starting point and inspiration for Vavarella who spent periods of residence there between 2019 and 2020. The stay in the area allowed the artist to think and write very rigorous questions in order to carry out interviews with some inhabitants of the Cape of Leuca.
The dialogues between Vavarella and the returning emigrants allowed the artist to collect stories of lives far from home, dwelling on detailed descriptions of places and details, including architectural ones, of the houses in “foreign land”.
MNEMOSCOPIO is a work designed to be enjoyed in the same place where the filming of the physical space at 360 °. The physical experience made by the spectators with the viewer intends to reactivate the real space of the filming through the map of virtual memories and the voices that overlap them, thus generating a sensorial short circuit.
The work is available for viewing from 1 to 14 August 2020, from 18:00 to 20:30, at the Hotel Terminal in Leuca and from 17 to 23 August, from 18:00 to 20:30, at Punta Cannone in Tricase. From August 25th the opera will be viewable at Lastation by appointment.
